About Me
Pronouns: He/Him/His. Pronunciation: surge al-eh-shin gwen-dell
Hello! I’m a research mathematical statistician in the Center for Statistical Research and Methodology at the United States Census Bureau.
To see what I’ve been working on lately check out the newly released small area estimates for the 2023 Annual Integrated Economic Survey, available as an experimental data product.
Previously, I was a postdoctoral associate in the Department of Statistical Science at Duke University, adivised by Rebecca Steorts. I completed my doctoral studies in the Department of Biostatistics at the University of Washington, adivised by Mauricio Sadinle and Jon Wakefield. My dissertation research focused on record linkage, multiple-systems estimation (otherwise known as capture-recapture), and models for complex survey data.
I previously was a part of the research team producing estimates of excess mortality during the COVID-19 pandemic for the World Health Organization (WHO). See the following links for results, methods, and media coverage.
Originally from Maryland, I graduated from Boston College with a B.S. in Math and a B.A. in Computer Science. Outside of work, I enjoy hanging out with my cats, reading, rock climbing, playing tennis, and gaming (currently Balatro, Teamfight Tactics, and Slay the Spire 2).
